A substrate, a construction method or a finish called for in a location where the grade does not require it and nobody will ever see or touch it. This is the most common finding and the easiest to act on, because the specification usually permits the lighter build already.
Where a substitution is worth asking about.
A specified product that is available but expensive, or has a functionally identical alternative that the approved-equal clause would accept. The flag names the question; whether to ask it is a commercial decision and it stays with you.
Both arrive as part of the drawing work rather than as a separate exercise.
A flag is only useful if it's specific enough to act on at the bench.
Where the money usually sits
Not in cheaper materials. In method.
Repetition.
Three details that are nearly the same cost more than one detail used three times, in drawing, in setup and on the floor. Consolidating them changes nothing a reviewer will see.
Material yield.
Panel dimensions set without reference to sheet sizes waste material invisibly across a whole package. Adjusting a dimension by a few millimetres can change the sheet count.
Construction sequence.
Two methods producing the same visible result at different labour costs, where the drawing never specified which.
Grade-appropriate substrate.
Exposed, semi-exposed and concealed surfaces carry different obligations. Building all three to the exposed standard is common and it is money.
What full value engineering needs
Proposing alternates priced against your shop's methods requires knowing what your machines can hold, what you stock, what your labour actually costs to do one thing rather than another, and which of your people will resist which change.
None of that arrives with a drawing set. It accumulates across projects.
So the deeper version sits inside established accounts, and we will tell you when we have earned it rather than promise savings we cannot substantiate.

Can you value engineer a package we have already bid?
The flags, yes. The options narrow once the design is fixed and the contract is signed, but over-specification and repetition findings still apply and are often worth acting on.
Will the architect accept the changes?
That depends on the change and the project. Items likely to be acceptable are separated from items that will need a substitution request, so you know which conversation you are having before you start it.
Is this available on a first project?
The flags are. The deeper version needs account history, because pricing alternates against a shop's methods without knowing those methods is guesswork dressed as advice.
Is this the same as constructability review?
No. Constructability asks whether it can be built. This asks whether it needs to be built that way. They are frequently raised together during the same detailing work.
