AWMAC & GIS A different document, not a regional variant.

Canadian architectural woodwork is documented to its own standard, and the assumption that it is a regional variant of the American one causes more submittal problems than any other single misunderstanding in this market.

What AWMAC requires

The Architectural Woodwork Manufacturers Association of Canada publishes the standards that govern most Canadian architectural woodwork.

Those standards set their own grade structure, their own construction requirements and their own tolerances. They cover the same territory as the American standards and they resolve it differently in enough places to matter on a submittal.

The applicable standard stated on the sheet rather than assumed.

Where it differs from AWI

Not in intent. In the specifics that end up on a drawing.

Grade definitions are not interchangeable.
The names may look familiar. What each one permits and requires is defined by its own document, and reading across from the American equivalent produces a set that answers the wrong question.
Construction requirements resolve differently.
Where two standards cover the same condition, they do not always require the same answer, and a reviewer working to one will not accept the other.
Tolerances are set by the governing document.
The gap a reviewer accepts is the gap that document permits, not the one the drawing assumed.

The practical consequence is simple. A set drawn to the American standard on a Canadian project is not slightly wrong. It is answering a different document.

What GIS actually is

Worth separating clearly, because it is frequently spoken about as though it were a drawing standard. It is not.

The Guarantee and Inspection Service is a programme. Where a project specifies it, the fabricator registers, and the programme brings obligations around inspection and remedy that persist beyond the drawing stage.

Those obligations carry cost and process implications. They belong in the estimate rather than being discovered after the bid.

What detailing can do is identify that the project specifies it, and report what the specification says about it. What detailing cannot do is register, inspect, guarantee or discharge any part of it.

Who holds the credential

AWMAC publishes the standard.
The fabricator carries the obligation,
and where GIS applies, the fabricator is the party who registers for the programme.
AWMAC and its inspection service certify and inspect fabricators.
That relationship is between the association and the shop.
BluEnt detailing does neither.
We detail to the standard your project names and report what it requires. We hold no AWMAC membership, we are not an inspection authority, and we do not register, guarantee or certify any part of a project.

What it changes in the drawing

Obligation
What appears on the sheet
Governing standard
Identified in the general notes, so a reviewer does not infer which document the set answers
AWMAC grade
Construction, material and tolerance obligations drawn to the Canadian definition
GIS on the project
Identified in the package so inspection and remedy obligations reach the estimate
Unit convention
Confirmed per project. Both are in circulation in this market
Substrate and exposure
Drawn to what the governing grade permits
Bilingual documentation
Where the project requires it, confirmed at scoping

Answers

Common questions

Are you AWMAC members?
No. AWMAC publishes the standard and its programmes certify and inspect fabricators. We detail to the standard your project names and report what it requires.
Is AWMAC just the Canadian version of AWI?
No. It is a separate standard with its own grade structure, construction requirements and tolerances. Reading across from the American document produces a set that answers the wrong question.
Can you handle a project registered for the Guarantee and Inspection Service?
We identify that the project specifies it and report what the specification requires, so the obligations reach the estimate. Registration, inspection and guarantee sit with the fabricator and the association.
Which standard applies to our project?
Whichever the specification names, and that is confirmed before drawing rather than assumed from the project's location.

Which standard governs, and what it obliges

Is usually the first useful thing to establish.

  • AWMAC read as its own document, not as a regional AWI variant
  • GIS identified as a programme, not a drawing standard
  • No AWMAC membership, inspection authority or guarantee capability claimed
  • One named contact, not a general queue
