BIM Adoption to be Supported by Global Government Initiatives Through to 2020
What’s driving the projection of nearly 20% of cumulative annual growth in the BIM software market?
Toronto, ON – December 19th 2016 : The global BIM software market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 17.04% from 2016 to 2020, according to the Research and Markets’ recent Global Building Information Modeling (BIM) Software Market 2016-2020 report.

The Push for BIM by 2020
According to the NBS International BIM Report 2016, BIM was considered “the future of project information” by each participating nation and more than 75% of total respondents. But what’s driving this belief?
According to Research and Market’s report, factors such as government mandates and general support of Building Information Modeling technologies in construction projects are creating growth in its global adoption.
This is especially the case in the US, UK, and Singapore. They are devoted advocates of BIM’s capabilities in minimizing errors and reducing project duration in the development and execution stages of construction.
Furthermore, report found that technological advancements have given rise to open-source BIM solutions that expand its market reach to more micro and small-scale organizations.
This is presenting an affordable alternative to commercial BIM and its high purchasing and licensing costs. More and more categories of open-source BIM software are entering the market and making BIM possible for organizations that might have otherwise been priced out of the software.
The Current Outlook in 2016
BIM awareness is nearly universal in all countries at over 90%. Of these, most respondents recognize that adopting BIM requires changes in workflow, practice and procedure.
More than 80% of non-users are still interested in adopting BIM. Likewise, only a small minority of those who have regret having started using BIM.
90% of respondents use BIM to produce 3D visualizations, followed by 75% of users of clash detection tools through BIM technology. Performance analysis has also been widely used in 2016, but not to the extent of 3D visualization and clash detection.
The report stated that all countries surveyed expect BIM to be adopted by over 80% of design professionals within the next five years. Canada, the UK, and Denmark forecast that the vast majority of adoption will occur within the next one to three years.
In particular, Canada has reported increased usage of BIM in the past year from 64% to 67%. However, it is worth noting that only 15% of Canadian respondents in the 2016 Report agreed with the statement “the Government is on the right track with BIM.”
This suggests that users believe more work could be done in governmental support of BIM. Despite this, 52% believe that the government will enforce the use of Building Information Modelling for public sector work.
As for current challenges, the major problems faced by the construction industry revolve around an inability to complete construction projects on time and within budget. This includes inefficient project planning, lack of contractor experience, delayed delivery of materials, and improper site management.
These are the very issues that can be eliminated through the adoption of BIM software. Thus, it is more than likely that Research and Markets’ projection for international BIM growth will come to fruition.
