Why the data side never got staffed

The machine is the visible investment. The data preparation is not, and it is easy to assume the software handles it.

It does not. Software turns a model into output, but somebody has to establish what the machine holds, what material is actually stocked, what the tooling does and what the table can grip. That knowledge is specific to your shop, it is rarely written down, and the person who had it is frequently the person who left.

Hiring for it is difficult because the role sits between drawing and machining, and people who can do both are not queuing up.

Where those parameters are not documented, establishing them is the first piece of work rather than an optional extra.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you program our machine?
No. Post-processors, toolpath and G-code stay with your programmer or your machine integrator. What can be produced from outside is the data layer above the machine: cut lists, nested layouts and part geometry, to the parameters you supply.
We do not know our own parameters. Is that a problem?
It is common, particularly where the person who set the machine up has left. Establishing them properly is a separate piece of work and it should happen before anyone optimises anything.
Will the output run first time?
Output is produced to the parameters you supply, and first runs should always be verified on a test cut. Nobody who has not stood at your machine should promise more than that.
We have a parametric platform but only use it for drawings. Can that change?
That is one of the most common situations we see. We work inside your environment and produce the output it was purchased for.
