A bar front that is a steel frame carrying timber panels and a glass display. A retail fixture where a brake-formed bracket holds a shelf. A gaming surround combining metal, wood and an integrated lighting run. A museum case where glass, frame and timber meet in a visible line.

Anything where two or more materials have to meet accurately. Most retail, hospitality, gaming and display work qualifies, which is why it is common rather than exotic.

Each material is fabricated to a different tolerance.

Metal fabrication and woodworking do not hold the same one. The difference has to be absorbed by design, or it gets absorbed by force on the assembly floor.

They move differently.

Timber moves across the grain with moisture. Metal does not. A long run fixed rigidly at both ends will show it.

Finish adds thickness to both sides.

Powder coating and wood finishing each build up, and a connection dimensioned to nominal sizes has lost its clearance by the time both parts arrive finished.

Split between two vendors, the connection belongs to neither.

Each draws their own parts correctly. The place where they meet gets assumed twice, differently, and is discovered at assembly.
